RECONCEPTUALIZING THE ARCHITECTURAL PRECEDENT
This seminar focuses on the concept of architectural precedent. It is argued that the potential of architectural precedent as an instrument for architectural design and education can be revealed by reconceptualizing it as a trans-historical term. Rather than a model for problem solving, architectural precedent acts as a source for generation of knowledge and form. Within this framework, reading of precedents will be considered as a generative act rather than merely analytical. The lecture addresses the potential of precedent to initiate design processes. In doing so, precedent will be redefined as a catalyst for design activity and its implications for education will be discussed.
